Chandragiri Day Hiking - 1 Day

Among the many hiking trails in Nepal, the Chandragiri Hiking Trail has become one of the most popular and well-known routes for hiking enthusiasts from around the world. This scenic trail takes you through lush green slopes and begins at Bhakra Thankot, near the bottom station of the Chandragiri Cable Car. From there, the trail continues all the way to the top of Chandragiri Hill.

Although the hike can be moderately challenging, a newer and gentler trail is also available for those who prefer a more comfortable ascent to the same destination. However, many hikers prefer the traditional trekking trail, which is also popular among residents.

As we wander through the peaceful wilderness, we are captivated by the natural beauty of Chandragiri Hill. The hike is not excessively difficult and takes approximately three hours to reach the hilltop, which stands at an elevation of 2,551 meters in the southwestern part of the Kathmandu Valley.

As the trail winds through the dense forests of Chandragiri, the effort is rewarded with spectacular panoramic views from the summit. On a clear day, you can enjoy magnificent views of Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, Gaurishankar, Buddha Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and Jugal Himal, which lies between the Gaurishankar and Langtang ranges. Visitors can further enhance their experience by using the binoculars available at the restaurant near the viewpoint tower.

Some researchers believe that the name "Chandragiri" may have originated from the word "Chandan," meaning sandalwood, combined with "Giri," meaning mountain in Sanskrit. Another account suggests that the name may have a connection with Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher.
