The Chepang Community Trek which follows the Siraichuli Trekking Trail is one of the most interesting, but underrated treks in Nepal. It is a newly opened trail that introduces visitors to the Chepang community and its unique culture. The Chepang are an indigenous Tibeto-Burman ethnic group dwelling in the rugged ridges of the Mahabharat mountain range of central Nepal. Chepang people, once a strictly nomadic group, now embrace a semi-nomadic lifestyle and are among one of the most neglected indigenous groups of Nepal.

The Siraichuli Trekking route got its name from Siraichuli Peak, the highest hill peak of Chitwan District, in the Narayani Zone of Nepal. Siraichuli hill peak at 1945m commands spectacular views of majestic mountains Like Dhaulagiri, Gaurisankhar, Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Annapurna, and Manaslu, and the Terai belt of the southern region of Nepal. Travelers trek to Siraichuli Peak to admire stunning sunrise and sunset views from the hill peak.

The Siraichuli Trek route follows the hiking trails between Kathmandu and Chitwan, through landscapes ranging from the lush lowland of Chitwan National Park to the hill peak. This trail has been explored to promote Eco-Tourism and improve local communities’ social and economic standards. This trek, directly and indirectly, emphasizes exposure to this amazing indigenous culture.

The trail passes through lowland, pine, and rhododendron forests on the Trading route between the Terai plains to Kathmandu. It bestows a distinctive landscape, unlike any other trek in Nepal. The area is home to more than 230 species of birds and thus heaven for bird-watching. The panoramic views from the hill peak, cultural experiences of Chepang, homestay, and bird-watching are some of the major highlights of this trek.

Siraichuli Chepang Hill Trek Route: This trek starts from Kathmandu with a scenic ride to Hugdi along the Trishuli river bank. The ride offers an amazing view of the Trishuli River valley, green hills, and mountains. It will take you 2-3 hours to reach Hugdi, a small Magar village. You will march towards Hattibang through a forested trail along the terrace fields. The trail gradually ascends and passes through groves of orange trees before reaching Jogipuri, a small village inhabited by Brahmin and Chettri communities.  And finally, you will be in Hattibang.

Here are additional points of interest along the way:

  • The elephant stone gives the name Hattibang to the village.
  • Birds like the Eurasian Jay, White Browed Shrike Babbler, Mountain Bulbul, and more
  • Savor ethnic Chepang foods in Jandala and points along the way.
  • On day three you will head to Siraichuli, Chisapanitor, and Gadi.
  • On day four you will descend to Shaktikhor through the Sal Forest to the Chepang Museum.

Chitwan National Park is full of treasured natural wonders, particularly renowned for its substantial population of one-horned rhinos, with nearly 600 individuals, accounting for a quarter of the global total for this species. The park is also home to about 100 tigers! This beautiful trek allows hikers of every ability a chance to enjoy life in Nepal. We will hike three to five hours a day at a moderate pace. Our focus is to share the natural wonders along the way and experience the kindness and beauty of the Indigenous Chepang Culture.
